If you enjoy challenging yourself with complex games then the speed cube is a well-known and unmatched device that will challenge you for hours and days on end. It’s original, the Rubix cube, was a huge hit when it was released and there are now hundreds of speed cube competitions around the globe.

Here we list out our top 10 picks for the best speed cube and go into a detailed review of the best 3 offers.

Keep This in Mind When Buying a Speed Cube

When you’re considering a speed cube for yourself or someone else there are so many options available to you. Here we’ve listed your top ten choices but there’re a few things you’ll want to consider before you make your purchase:

  • Competition Grade. Means that the cube can be used for competing against opponents in international tournaments. Only some cubes are graded from competition use, so check the labeling carefully.
  • Colors. Not only do the colors help identify sides, they also make it easier to visually map out your future moves. Some colors will be distracting to you whilst others seem to be a natural fit. When comparing cubes, compare the colors to see which is more appealing to your unique eye.
  • Cube Size. Cubes come in 2 main sizes, a 4 faced cube (small) and a 9 faced cube (regular). There are also geometrical cubes that aren’t square, these pose an even tougher challenge for non-competition.

Buying Information

Buying the best speed cube comes with a short list of features that every Rubik’s cube fan should be looking for. The best Rubik’s cubes have all of these features:

  • Stickerless Cubes. Eliminate the colors falling off the cube faces, which is great for high-frequency users and tournament play. Not only will your fingers glide over the surfaces easier, you’ll never need to second guess when multiple stickers fall off!
  • Cornering. Rubik’s cubes are made to rotate around a sphere in the center, some manufacturers have more cornering built into their cubes than others do. Competition cubes all have to be the same calibration, but ensuring your cube has the best cornering will improve your solution times.
  • Adjustable Tensioning. Allows you to fine-tune how tight the cubes are to the center Some users prefer very loose movements whilst others like a more rigid approach. The trouble with loose movements is that cubes may be accidentally moved whilst you’re trying to move a different cube… making for mistakes and frustration.
  • Anti-Pop Technology. Ensures that the individual cubes don’t pop off of the springs and mechanisms inside the cube. This gives you the ease of mind in knowing your cube will be long lasting and won’t let you down in a competition or timed game.
  • Lubrication. Some cubes come fully lubricated whilst others don’t. You should regularly lubricate your cube every 100 hours of use. Apply a few drops of silicon-based lubricant to the cracks of the cube and work it into the mechanisms to ensure smooth movements.

Top 3 Best Speed Cube Reviews

1. D-FantiX Moyu Aolong V2 Speed Cube 3×3

Out of the box, this cube is the smoothest Rubik’s cube we reviewed. Not only were we able to play with it straight away without making any adjustments, the cube felt great with every turn in our hands.

The mechanism is super smooth and completely flawless. We’re not speed cubers but we still managed to solve the cube in a few minutes (after a steep learning curve and some tips from online).

Some users find the bright colors a little distracting when they first start using this cube, however, we urge you to stick with it. The colors greatly assisted us in solving the cube quickly once we were used to them.

Going back to subdued colors made it 10x harder to solve the cube once we were used to the new colors. The movements of this cube are really predictable and consistent making for faster and improved times on our solving.

2. The Cube: Turns Quicker and More Precisely

If you’re just starting out with Rubik’s cubes then this is a great beginner cube for you. It doesn’t have the smoothest mechanism or the cornering that you’ll find in more expensive cubes, but it’s a great performer none the less.

It doesn’t have any means to tighten the tension on the cube, which is good and bad. Good in the sense that there is no way to pull the cube apart and potentially break or lose pieces. Bad in that overtime the tensioning will loosen, but in reality, you’ll likely upgrade to a better cube before you notice any looseness.

The corner cutting in this cube isn’t great. In fact, it did lock up a few times during our testing – mind you that some of our users were pushing 1-minute solutions and putting the cube under immense stress.

3. Xtimer X-V6 Anti-pop 3×3 Stickerless

For speed cubing fans, this is a great option. This cube corners well and is on par with some of the best (and more expensive) cubes in the market today. The motions of this cube are smooth, with easy turning and good control.

The edges of the cube are a little less rounded than other top end models, which makes it a little harder to hold in the palm of your hand but it is still fairly comfortable.

All in all, this is the best speed cube for intermediate users.
